This fish has a rounded body, compressed sides, an arched back, a tapered operculum and a strong backbone. Its scales are small and jagged. Its back is brownish-green with yellowish green sides, a silver-coloured belly and dark, vertical stripes on its sides. Its average size is 18-20 cm and maximum length is 45 cm.

Its fine quality flesh is tasty, delicate, firm and lean. The best season for fishing is springtime. Fishing techniques used are: Tofone con ali (a cone-shaped net supported by a series of wooden, iron or plastic rings), gill nets (made from three pieces of overlapping net), a fixed rod or with a reel and floats for the “tocco” fishing technique.
