“Madonne, cavalieri et lo populo tucto…” these are the words that echo in the town square of Narni during its most important celebration: the ancient Corsa dell'anello (Race of the Ring).

In May of every year, in the days preceding or following the festa del defensor civitatis, the celebration of patron saint, San Giovenale, the three districts of Mezzule, Fra Porta and Santa Maria challenge each other. The celebration is a reconstruction of the games and rituals that were held in honour of the blessed Giovenale, the first bishop of Narni, in the first half of the 14th century.  The town-criers on horseback, with the solemn "Lettura del Banno" (Reading of the Notice), invite the horsemen of Narnia to the "certamen" (fight), so that they may express their ability to protect the city during the competition.

The streets come alive, with a procession of more than 600 people, heading towards the Cathedral, to pay homage to the patron saint, with an “Offering of Candles at the Cathedral".  The precious costumes worn by the protagonists in the historical reconstruction are the product of the skilful hands of the ladies of the three districts. Under the guidance of historical costume experts and only after extensive iconographic studies, cuts, fabrics and accessories are proposed, to skillfully represent the fourteenth-century era. The Race of the Ring is at the heart of the event. The horsemen gallop and lash out with their  lances, aiming to insert them into the target (the ring).

All this is enriched by shows, scenes from the past and reproductions of pictures by 14th century artists, culminating in the "Bravio per il migliore terziere" prize, awarded to the winning district.

The taverns, decorated with typical period ornaments, offer the opportunity to experience a typical fourteenth-century environment, with typical flavors, atmospheres and old traditional games.
