THE PALIO DEI TERZIERI IN CITTA' DELLA PIEVE PDF Print E-mail

Dames and knights, flag throwers, taverns with old traditional flavours, shops and period markets, Renaissance melodies and the exciting challenge of archery. We are in Città della Pieve, or rather, to be true to the period being reconstructed, Castel della Pieve.

For ten days every year, in August, a rich programme of festivities animates the ancient streets of the city: the Palio dei Terzieri is a charming medieval re-enactment. Following its submission to Perugia in 1250, Città della Pieve was divided into three parts, called terzieri, and the town’s urban structure recalls the shape of an eagle, pointing ominously towards Rome.

Each Terziere symbolizes a different social class:  Terziere Castello or Class of the Knights (aristocracy and Eagle’s head, black and green colours), Borgo Dentro Terziere (Bourgeoisie and Eagle's belly, yellow and black colours) and Terziere Casalino or Pedestrian Class (peasants and Eagle's wing, blue, white and red colours).

The symbols of the terzieri, the medieval castle, the well of Casalino and the Fortress of Borgo Dentro are all depicted in the historical Pallium. This is a beautiful, painted tapestry and work of the great master from Pieve, Antonio Marroni.

It portrays the archers paying homage to the judge of the competition, the Master of the Field. The Pallium itself is the object contended in the archery challenge, which is the most important moment of the re-enactment.

The knights, challenging each other in the art of archery, recall the ancient Bull Hunt of the 15th and 16th centuries. The objective is to hit the shapes attached to moving platforms, representing the Chianina breed of bull.

The 15th August marks the launch of the challenge: the winning Terziere of the last edition returns the Pallium to the Podestà (mayor) of Castel della Pieve, and it is preserved in the municipal building. It is brought out again on the day of the Bull Hunt, to appear in the great historical procession, preceded by the banner of the city.
