The Dunarobba fossil forest PDF Print E-mail

Have you ever imagined walking through a forest of millions of years ago? This is possible in the paleontological site in Dunarobba, in the municipality of Avigliano Umbro, in the province of Terni. In a striking landscape, you can admire the fossil remains of a coniferous forest, dating back to the Pliocene Epoch. Anther particularity is that about 50 tree trunks are preserved in an upright position, due to a gradual subsidence of the ground, thus allowing palaeontologists to gain deeper knowledge about the environmental characteristics in which these fascinating trees lived and which probably of considerable size, given that their diameter can reach up to 4 meters.

This imposing forest also tells of a large lake, which was probably shaped like and upside-down Y and covered a large part of Umbria, starting from what is today, the Upper Tiber Valley and a vast area of swampland, in which the climate was decidedly warmer than today’s climate.

There are numerous educational activities, including excavation experiences, organized by the Centre of Plant Palaeontology of the Dunarobba Fossil Forest and addressed to the pupils of primary and secondary schools. You go from the laboratory of Palaeontology (One day as  a Palaeontologist) to that of Paleobotany (looking of seed fossils), to that of Geology (classifying rocks) to that of Archaeology (The work of an archaeologist. Archaeology as a science for reconstructing  history. It may also be possible to gain insights into biodiversity and botany, to learn the secrets of plants, and energy, in order to focus on hydrocarbons and pollution.
